A tournament billiard table is the only piece of residential furniture engineered to the tolerances of a musical instrument. Done well, it is also among the few that will sit in a family longer than the family sits in the house. The decision deserves the time it asks for.
The slate beneath the cloth
Beneath the felt is the table. Beneath the table is a single, severe truth: slate. Slate is the geological substrate that determines whether a ball rolls true at three feet and at thirty, whether the table will play in ten years as it plays in its first week, whether the room contains an instrument or a piece of approximate furniture.
The professional standard is one-inch Italian slate, diamond-honed flat to within five one-thousandths of an inch across its surface. The slate is quarried in regions, Liguria, Piemonte, where the stone forms in fine, even strata, then milled in shops that have been producing tournament beds for a century. The difference between this slate and the cheaper grades sold into the residential market is not theoretical. It is audible: a true slate returns a low, dry tone under the cue ball; a thin or laminated bed returns a hollow rattle.
Three-piece slate is the standard for tables nine feet and larger. Properly seated on a steel frame, leveled with shims, and finished with beeswax along the seams, the three sections behave as a single plane. A one-piece slate is romantic, and structurally sound for eight-foot tables, but the weight (often above eight hundred pounds in a single sheet) creates installation problems that no advantage in play justifies.

Frame, cabinet, and the question of joinery
Above the slate sits the cabinet. This is the visible architecture of the table. The rails, the legs, the apron, the cross-braces that carry the slate's weight to the floor. It is also where most of the failures of cheap tables originate: veneered MDF that swells under humidity, butt-joined corners that loosen under the impact of a hard break, particleboard cores that cannot be reworked when a leg loosens in year forty.
Solid hardwood is the only material worth specifying. Walnut, quartersawn white oak, mahogany, and maple are the traditional choices, each with a different acoustic and visual character. Walnut is the most forgiving of room lighting, deepening into a chocolate patina over decades. Oak, particularly rift-sawn or quartersawn, reads as quieter, more architectural, and pairs gracefully with stone and steel. Mahogany is the historicist's wood, traditional in the English and American club room.
Joinery is the test of the maker. Look for mortise-and-tenon construction at every corner of the cabinet, doweled and glued, with steel braces only where structural calculation demands them. Examine the underside of the apron: the work that no one will ever see is where the maker's standards are confessed. A table built to be reworked, pinned, not glued; bolted, not welded, can be refurbished four or five times across two centuries of use.
Cushions, cloth, and pockets
The cushions are the moving parts of the table. The world standard is K-66 profile vulcanized rubber, manufactured by a small number of suppliers in northern Italy and Belgium, with a working life of fifteen to twenty-five years in residential use. Anything else, recycled rubber, synthetic blends, the harder profiles sold for bar tables, produces a duller, less predictable rebound and accelerates the wear of the cloth.
Cloth is a consumable. Tournament-grade worsted wool (Simonis 860 and its peers) plays faster, holds spin more cleanly, and lasts three to seven years in serious residential use. Napped billiard cloth is a different surface entirely, suited to English and snooker tables, and asks a different stroke. Specify the cloth to the play, not the room. Colour is the final aesthetic decision: traditional tournament green; quieter slate, walnut, or charcoal for the integrated room; never burgundy, never red.
Pockets are the last detail. Hand-cut leather pockets with shield-stitched seams and brass or unlacquered bronze rivets will age across decades. Stamped plastic and welded metal pockets are the surest sign of a table built to a price.

Room, clearance, and the geometry of play
A table without clearance is a sculpture. The professional standard is five feet of cue clearance on every side, measured from the rail. Below that figure, certain shots become impossible; below four and a half feet, the room is unplayable for an adult of average height with a standard fifty-eight-inch cue.
Sizing follows the room, not the ambition. A nine-foot tournament table requires a room of at least nineteen by sixteen feet; an eight-foot table needs eighteen by fourteen; a seven-foot bar table, rarely the right choice for a residential commission, can be sited in seventeen by thirteen. If the room cannot meet the standard, shorten the cues, not the clearance.
Floor loading should be confirmed by the residence's structural engineer. A nine-foot tournament table with slate, cabinet, and frame weighs between nine hundred and twelve hundred pounds. The load is distributed across six to eight feet but concentrated at the legs; a residential floor without engineered support should be reviewed before installation.
Light, sound, and what surrounds the table
The table is half the room. The other half is the light it sits beneath, the floor it stands on, and the seating that allows the evening to continue between racks.
Lighting is the most consequential of these. A traditional billiard fixture, three to five shaded pendants suspended thirty-two to thirty-six inches above the cloth, focuses task light on the playing surface without spilling into the seating perimeter. Modern integrated fixtures can achieve the same effect with greater discretion, but the height is non-negotiable: too high and the rails shadow; too low and the room loses its centre.
Floors should be carpeted at the perimeter and either left as the existing finish or carpeted entirely beneath the table. Hard floor immediately under the table contributes a brightness that competes with the strike of the cue ball; a deep rug or wall-to-wall wool quiets the room without dampening conversation. Seating belongs at the perimeter, not at the rail: leather club chairs, a low banquette, a small bar at one end. The table is the instrument; the room is for the people who are not currently playing.
Provenance, warranty, and the long horizon
Names matter. The world's serious tables come from a small number of houses, most of them family workshops in Italy, France, England, and the United States, and each carries its own century of craft. Ask the maker's history, the slate quarry, the source of the cushion rubber, the joinery of the rails. A maker who will not document these details is a maker selling assembly.
Warranty is the formal expression of the maker's confidence. The serious houses guarantee the cabinet for the original purchaser's lifetime, the slate against warpage in perpetuity, and offer scheduled releveling for the first decade. A ten-year warranty on a billiard table is a marketing instrument; a lifetime warranty is a contract that the table is built to be reworked, not replaced.
A note on the decision
The right billiard table is bought once. The price differential between a credible residential table and a tournament instrument is rarely more than a single family's annual vacation, and the instrument will sit at the centre of the room for the entire life of the residence and likely the next.
